Chapter - 1 Summary 

Sadguru Gopalanand Swami was a great yogic saint whose uniqueness was acknowledged by Shriji Maharaj. Born as Khushal Bhatt in Samvat 1837 at Todla village, he mastered Sanskrit, Vedas, Vedanta, and yoga from a young age. Miraculous incidents involving the Shamlaji murti and the remission of a tax by a king revealed his divine powers. After hearing about Swaminarayan Bhagwan, he became His devoted follower. The Lord Himself, in the guise of a Brahmin, guided him. On Samvat 1864 Kartik Vad 8, he received initiation from Shriji Maharaj and was named “Gopalanand Swami.”

By the command of Shriji Maharaj, Gopalanand Swami spread satsang in Vadodara and inspired scholars and rulers, including Sayajirao Gaekwad. He manifested Yagnanarayan during a yajna and halted an eclipse to protect a devotee’s honor. In Sarangpur, he consecrated a Hanuman murti that relieved devotees’ hardships. Through his spiritual discourses, many devotees gained firm faith. He granted samadhi to Manbha and revealed Shriji Maharaj’s divine form. Entrusted with temple responsibilities, he upheld the glory of Gunatitanand Swami. Despite opposition and insults, he remained steadfast in renunciation and forgiveness.

Gopalanand Swami embodied compassion. He reinstated Hamir into satsang through repentance and sent his leading disciples to the association of Gunatitanand Swami. He boldly proclaimed the supreme form of Shriji Maharaj despite opposition. Declaring that his vision was fixed on Akshardham, he left his body through yogic power on Samvat 1908, Vaishakh Vad 4. He contributed by editing the Vachanamrut and composing scriptural commentaries, establishing the doctrinal foundation of Akshar-Purushottam worship. Shastriji Maharaj later honored him by consecrating his murtis in temples.
